What do Julianne Hough, Nina Dobrev and Hilary Duff all have in common? Their always-perfect textured beachy waves, of course. They also happen to share the same hairstylist/BFF — wave master and owner of LA’s Nine Zero One Salon, Riawna Capri. Unfortunately for the rest of us, creating their effortless looks without a pro on speed-dial isn’t very easy.

What you’ll need: A large hair clip, 1” curling iron, heat protectant and texturizing sprays (she used MarulaOil Rare Oil Perfecting Hairspray)

Step 1: Split your hair in half, so you can begin working on the bottom portion.

Step 2: Grab a 2 in. section of hair, and wrap it around your curling iron, holding the ends out so they stay straight. (Pro tip: all of the hair that lies in front of your ears should be wrapped away from your face.) As the hair is wrapped around the wand, tap it to feel the temperature. When it’s warm to the touch, release and tug at the ends for a few seconds to loosen the curl.

Step 3: Grab your next section, and wrap it around the iron in the opposite direction that you wrapped the previous one. Repeat throughout your entire head, continuing to alternate directions as you make your way around. (Pro tip: Save your two front pieces for last.)

Step 4: You know that Victoria’s Secret, peek-a-boo front swoop that every celeb has? Here’s Capri’s secret: Once you make your way to your two front sections of hair, hold each one out in front your cheek, and begin wrapping it around the wand starting at eye level. This way, the upper few inches of the section forms a smooth, curtain-like wave in front of your face, instead of a curl, creating the sexy effortless look that everyone’s dying to figure out.

Step 5: It’s time for finishing touches! If any curls are too tight, Capri suggests simply swiping over them quickly with a flat iron. Then, mist texturizing spray all over and tousle to add volume and that just-left-the-beach vibe.
