We’re longing for bright colors during the winter doldrums, so her striped tank and Kelly green blazer are a welcome burst of color on a gray day. Color Love: Navy

As basic as black but with a fresh-faced edge for spring, navy is the new neutral. It’s nautical by nature, but navy is as modern as can be when paired with this season’s pieces. We love it as a topper: a cardigan or a classic peacoat keeps you warm as fashion transitions into spring. We bring it to the office: a grown-up blouse or sleek dress. We take it to the weekend: a glittery flat, a striped top. And we adore it for the beach, its home sweet home, in a striped espadrille and sleek pair of shades.

1. Rag & Bone Navy V-neck Cardigan ($300)
Preppy, polished, and a wardrobe staple, this Rag & Bone cardigan will take you into spring. Cute cardigan style with a boyfriend flair. Wear over anything from work week to weekend.

Can’t you see Victoria Beckham or Kate Middleton working this dress? Its crisp, classic lines are made modern with its deep blue hue, exposed back zipper, and ruffled peplum. Wear it by day and work it for drinks, too.

4. Vince Night Blue Silk Top ($340)
Tuck it into a pencil skirt for work, then layer it with skinnies for weekend. This deep navy silk top works so many ways, bringing elegance to life with its clean lines. Tunic length with slightly longer back hem for bum coverage.

5. Rag & Bone Red/Creme Navajo Striped T-shirt ($110)
They go hand-in-hand. Few things are as classic as navy and stripes. This one gets a dose of red, too, making it an all-American t-shirt. Short, cuffed sleeves and a slimming, long length. Pair with everything from a skirt to skinnies.

6. Marc by Marc Jacobs Silver and Navy Glitter Mouse Ballerina Flats:

All Wrapped Up

All wrapped up! From the brisk fall winds to winter’s chill and into the first delicate breezes of spring…a scarf is the stylish way to ward off the cold. The designers all know it, from the catwalk to the department store, so this season’s shelves are stocked to overflowing with options. Warm up any outfit with a pop of print, from iconic zig zags to graphic blocks of color, classic stripes to delicate landscapes of florals. From office to play, the scarf lives up to its title as a must-have accessory.

1. Tory Burch T Wool Scarf ($185)
Totally Tory. This scarf will be one you hang onto for years to come. Its tonal blocks of tan and creme are shaped into bold letter T’s, to pay homage to the designer, of course. This luxe wool scarf is finished with a simple eyelash trim.

2. Lala Berlin Pink/Grey Printed Scarf ($200)
Spring forward with this flirty blend of pink and grey. So unbelievably soft, this lightweight modal scarf wards off the last of winter’s chill with its feminine print.

3. Diane von Furstenberg Linescape Hanovar Scarf ($195)
Got stripes? Get your dose of the most classic print around with this fresh take on stripes. Blocks of navy, fushia, and tan complement the black and white stripes to a T, while frayed hems lend a borrowed from the boyfriend flavor. To complete the look, pair with boyfriend jeans and your favorite flats.

4. Missoni Mandarin/Sand Zigzag Design Scarf ($325)
Zesty zig zags. Bold citrus orange combines with demure sand to create a pop print of iconic zig zags. Finished with a zig zag hem, there’s no doubt that the masterful Missoni was behind this wrap.

5. Matthew Williamson Oyster and Neon Dip Dye Fringe Scarf ($325)
Wear-able art. A lush, Eastern-inspired landscape is the focal point of this silk wrap, while the extra long fringe adds yet another layer of beauty with dip dyed colorblocks in neon and tan.

Looking Ahead: Fresh Florals

Celebrity Style and Fashion

In the midst of snow and cold, the spring runways shone bright with fresh florals. Any floral goes, from romantic vintage prints to mod pixelated flowers, bold splashes of color to monochromatic neutrals. These florals offer vintage inspiration from every decade: a structured silk dress from the 50′s, a boho bed jacket from the 60′s, a flared 70′s blouse, and a funky pair of printed booties, worthy of the crazy 80′s. All these pieces may have vintage vibes, but, believe me, these florals are FRESH!

1. Jason Wu Printed Structured Silk Dress ($1565)
Mad Men-esque. This Jason Wu dress gets its 50′s-inspired look from a structured silhouette, a full, flirty skirt and a trim, defined waistline. Add pumps for cocktail hour, and flats for a walk in the park.

2. Daniel Rainn Floral Bed Jacket ($79)
Go boho. This floral bed jacket is also vintage-inspired, but in a beautifully bohemian way. Throw this semi-sheer jacket on over flares and a tank or cutoffs and a tee for a go-to boho vibe.

3. Tinley Road Floral Blouse ($59)
Florals go with flares. We’ve gone vintage 50′s with Wu and vintage 60′s with Rainn, so let’s take a turn with the vintage appeal of the 70′s. Pair this warm, neutral floral blouse with flares and wedges.

4. Dallin Chase Dani Floral Gown ($266)
Maximize your maxi with a floral print. This demure dress gets romantic with its cascading floral print set on a classic black background. Made of chiffon, this dress moves beautifully in the breeze.

5. Rodarte for Opening Ceremony Floral High Heel Booties ($528)
Funky floral (Madonna in all her glory…think florals of the 80′s). These platform booties take any look to the next level with their mod square toes and cutout vamp. Perfect for traversing the seasons!

6. Elizabeth and James Jake Floral Printed Trouser ($325)
Fashion-forward flowers. The Olsen twins go bold with these sleek wide-legged trousers. A simple chiffon blouse is all these pants need for an uber trendy work look…or pair with wedges and a tank for resort-going.

7. Sam & Lavi Foz Soho Twill Short ($59)
Dreaming of the sun? Pick these up for spring break 2012! Perfect with a tank and your bikini on the beach, then style with tights, blazer and booties when you get back home. Elastic waistline with delicate lace trim.

Runway Inspired: African Prints

If last year was all about Aztec, this year it’s all about Africa. Tribal prints in bold colors ruled the runways for Spring 2012, ushering in a feast of color and texture for the eyes. Try out an African print for the obvious: dresses, maxi skirts, resort rompers, and lightweight blouses. The rules of the runway? Mix and match, have fun with color, and play with texture. To finish up an African-printed outfit, choose natural accessories like a wooden beaded necklace or leather woven wedge.

1. Twelfth St. by Cynthia Vincent Strapless Resort Jumper ($295)
Pair with a wedge and make the boardwalk your runway with this printed resort jumper. Sexy strapless cut with elastic waistband and sleek wide legs. Slant hip pockets add an effortlessly chic air.

2. House of Harlow 1960 Eden Open Toe Wedge ($295)
Woven wonders. Designer Nicole Richie hit it out of the park with these safari-inspired wedges. Two-toned leather with woven detailing throughout, covered heel and platform sole. Pair with everything, tribal or not!

3. Torn by Ronny Kobo Zoe Simba Long Sleeve Dress ($169)
Sexy safari. This mini dress wows with its bold tribal print and leg-baring hem length. A simple crew neck and three-quarter sleeves keeps things sophisticated.

4. Acne Trouville Printed Silk Top ($390)
Weekend wear. Pair this tribal print with your favorite flared denim or little black skinnies. Layer it up with a leather jacket or wear all by itself with cut-offs for summer. This lightweight silk top will take you all the way through 2012.

5. Oscar de la Renta Printed Silk Kaftan ($1990)
Sunset stunner. This printed caftan in done-up in beautiful blues and finished with a beaded neckline. A simple clutch and sandals is all this stunning kaftan needs to wow.

6. Kenneth Jay Lane Dark Wood and Bead Necklace ($84)
Bold beads. Strands and strands of wood beads work together to make a bold statement, but the neutral color makes these beads versatile as well. Pair with a maxi dress or dress up a simple tee.

Guest Editor: Celebrity Hairstylist Davy Newkirk

Rachel Bilson, Emily Blunt, Debra Messing, Molly Sims…to name just a few. Davy Newkirk’s list of celebrity clients is impressive, to say the least. He’s styled stars for everything from photo shoots to the red carpet, including the 2012 Golden Globes. Last Sunday night, Newkirk was the genius behind Jessica Biel’s romantic, boho waves (which he created with the help of Alterna Professional Haircare). As a special treat, Davy agreed to share both his inspiration and process with us today!

Overall Inspiration
“We wanted Jessica’s hair to compliment the ‘bohemian luxury’ feel of her dress. I loved the idea of natural cascading waves against the backdrop of the dress’s backless silhouette. The overall look evokes a relaxed vibe while still remaining polished and sophisticated.”

Hair Prep
“Jessica has a great head of hair; the texture is fine, but she has a ton of it! I added extra volume and lift at the roots while maintaining the feather light feel.“

1. Apply Alterna Bamboo Volume Weightless Whipped Mousse all over damp hair and Alterna Bamboo Volume Uplifting Root Blast to the roots. Blow dry using a large round brush; this smoothes the cuticle to ensure a polished result.

2. When hair is 95% dry give strands texture and wave with Alterna Bamboo Style Boho Waves Tousled Texture Mist and then finish with a rough dry using your fingers.

Hair Style
“While creating Jessica’s waves my goal was to keep the look youthful and modern.”

3. Divide hair into 1” sections and create waves using a 1¼” curling iron. Alternate between wrapping and clamping sections to maintain organic movement to the look.

4. Apply Alterna Bamboo Style Moldable Texture Paste to hands and using your fingers comb through the curls, tousling the strands as you go.

Finishing Touches
5. Mist hair with Alterna Bamboo Smooth Anti-Humidity Hair Spray, the flexible hold formula will set the style, add healthy shine and lock out frizz.

6. Smooth pieces around the face with Alterna Bamboo Style Moldable Texture Paste

Thank you for sharing, Davy. We can’t wait to see more from you!

Flirty Feet

Sparkle, shine, and tons of texture. When it comes to flirting with your feet, these three trends get the job done. Sparkle with glitter pumps, perfect for bringing light to a cold winter’s night. Go for metallic sheen, so edgy when paired with black denim and fun for the resort. Bold textures like lizard or python mix a little of the wild side into your wardrobe. As far as silhouettes go, the pump is classic, the t-strap is sexy, the wedge is fun, and the ankle strap…HOT for 2012.

1. Badgley Mischka Humbie Glitter Pumps ($200)
Let ‘em shine. Keep the rest of your accessories demure, so your feet can bring the heat. These open-toed pumps are festooned with glitter and metallic stitching. A disco ball of fun wherever you go.

2. Giuseppe Zanotti Faux Lizard T-Strap Sandals ($650)
Take a walk on the wide side with these lizard-embossed t-straps. In neutral beige and black, these sandals go with virtually everything: back to a pencil skirt and button up for office, shorts and blazer for play.

3. B Brian Atwood Lunetta High Heel Sandals ($325)
Dozens of suede and metallic leather leaves overlap to create a cascade of texture. Graceful and gorgeous, these neutral sandals give new meaning to the phrase “natural beauty.”

4. KORS Michael Kors Eliza Wedge Sandals ($350)
Pleasantly unexpected. Edgy metallic leather straps join rustic jute-covered platforms and rocker details like hardware studs and an exposed zipper. All these finishes make them everywhere appropriate, from the club to the beach and everywhere in between.

5. Boutique 9 Phylicia High Heel Ankle Cuff Sandals ($140)
Last year we were all about the neutral pump, this year we’re all for the neutral sandal. Elongate your legs with these beige beauties.

6. Alexander Wang Chloe High Heel Sandals ($525)
We saved the best for last. Rock the ankle strap just like Kristen Stewart did: with lace or leather, mini skirts or shorty shorts. Alexander Wang mixed leather textures and patent leather, graphite gray and midnight black to create these H-O-T heels.
